Hello lovely readers and welcome back to Mindset Mondays! The only weekly post that is considering becoming a monthly post instead…
Following a 3-2-1 approach, it contains 3 thoughts from me (that you should ignore), 2 quotes from others (that you should read), and 1 thing I’ve been reading, watching or listening to this week that has helped me grow.
As a bonus I’ve finished with 1 joke that’s so bad, it’s good.
Let’s begin!
3 x Thoughts:
1) Thoughts are like clouds. When you view them from the outside in, the ride is smooth. However, if you’re stuck inside the ride is turbulent. Just like an aeroplane, if you find yourself stuck in the clouds, it’s best to take a seat and ride it out. Trying to “fight” the turbulence only makes it worse.
2) If you want to instil a greater sense of control in your life it’s important to set clear boundaries. A child who isn’t given clear boundaries is unruly, and so it is with you.
3) The moment you want something, you are no longer present. If you are not present you cannot be at peace. To actively practise not wanting is at the heart of mindfulness.
2 x Quotes:
“Don’t beat yourself up for what you couldn’t do, or didn’t do. Just do the best you can now, now, and now.”
– Akiroq Brost
“Freedom without discipline is foolish, discipline without freedom is insanity.”
– Ilona Mialik
1 x Thing:
This BBC work-life article: How mindfulness could make you selfish. The article cites a study which suggests, “Practicing mindfulness can exaggerate some people’s selfish tendencies. With their increased inward focus, they seem to forget about others, and are less willing to help those in need.” The likelihood is greater for those with a more independent worldview (versus those who have a more interdependent one). Well worth the quick read.
1 x Joke:
Another far side comic for you all this week. I hope you enjoy!

PREVIOUS MONDAY POST:
The BBC articles was interesting. It struck me as a bit like saying walking can be bad for you because if you do it in a certain way you might injure yourself.

Yeah. I think the point it’s trying to make is mindfulness shouldn’t simply be about becoming more present, but to foster greater universal compassion as well.

I love the thoughts are like clouds idea, I use something similar during meditation. It also helps to think of my mind as a river, and thoughts as passing objects.
Hope your well. Cheers:)

Cheers Andrew. I’ve heard lots of different analogy’s. It’s like the difference between being in a storm versus being inside the comfort of your home looking out the window at the storm. Or being in the movie versus watching it from the outside. This one resonated as a pilot. I’m glad you liked it.
Wishing you well too. 🙂🙏

Thank you for this. Interesting take on mindfulness. I can relate to your thought #3 about wanting and staying present. 😌

Thank you taking the time to read and comment. Yes, every time I catch myself wanting, it’s a reminder that I’m not fully present. Wishing you well 🙏🙂

Practicing self kindness is so essential and your quote below resonated with me the most this week.
“Don’t beat yourself up for what you couldn’t do, or didn’t do. Just do the best you can now, now, and now.”
Happy Monday and have a great week, AP!

Everything has its problems. It all depends on our behaviour and in our understanding of things. Of course individual desires are fine and yes we all deserve the right to do and think as we want. You want to eat a whole cheesecake everyday, do it. Just remember when you heart plays up then those around you will take on the burden of something you deliberately chose to do to satisfy you. We all have individual rights and because we have them we need to honour them and honour what it means, not use it to gain what we want. I am heartily sick of the selfishness of entitlement at the cost of everyone else whether it is mindfulness, or refusing a vaccine. We have to be a global community in order to survive with integrity – now that is real mindfulness.

Very insightful words Barb. For me, understanding how interdependent and interconnected we all are is synonymous with what it means to be mindful. Thanks for adding your thoughts Barb – I hope you’re well 🙏
